MARKET TRENDS
Clean Energy opened six new RNG stations in May while a Canadian startup slashed upgrading costs by half, reshaping the fuel market's next chapter

Heavy-duty trucking was supposed to be renewable natural gas's proving ground. Increasingly, it's only the beginning
Clean Energy Fuels announced six new RNG fueling stations in May 2026, spread across California, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Michigan, and Washington. The locations were chosen deliberately, anchored along major freight corridors where long-haul and regional operators run their highest-mileage routes. For fleets already eyeing Cummins' 15-liter X15N engine from multiple OEM partners, the timing was welcome. Clean Energy now operates more than 600 locations across North America, serving transit agencies, refuse fleets, airports, and trucking operators alike
But the real story isn't at the pump. A November 2025 report commissioned by the RNG Coalition found that utilities and voluntary corporate buyers are becoming the primary growth engine for the market. Transportation demand keeps expanding, yet by 2030 the largest volume increases are projected to come from gas utilities locking in long-term, low-carbon supply. Utility demand alone could exceed 300 million MMBtu annually by that date, dwarfing what trucking fleets consume
Production costs are also falling. In April 2026, Hydron Energy launched its INTRUPTor upgrading system at the Bailey Landfill in Chilliwack, British Columbia. The platform uses a metal-organic framework to produce pipeline-quality RNG in a single stage, at ambient pressure, reportedly cutting capital and operating costs by up to 50% compared to conventional multi-stage technologies. Smaller landfill projects, long dismissed as uneconomical, may soon clear that threshold
Six new stations. One cost-cutting breakthrough. A surging utility market. The infrastructure is assembling faster than most forecasters anticipated, and the destination is no longer just the fuel pump
