PROJECT FINANCE

Capital continues to flow into anaerobic digestion and biogas upgrading infrastructure at a meaningful pace, and yet every financing case must now demonstrate that it can withstand shifting credit markets, evolving off-take values, and increasingly demanding lender due diligence. The biogas sector stands at an inflection point: project developers and financiers alike recognize the long-term strategic value of renewable natural gas (RNG), yet the path from a viable business plan to a bankable transaction is rarely straightforward. Regulatory production incentives, including the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS), and various state-level programs, continue to underpin revenue models, but the stacking and sequencing of these incentives demands sophisticated structuring expertise that not every project team commands.

Among the most consequential levers available to project developers is the optimization of feedstock agreements and offtake contracts. When digestate and gas offtake arrangements are structured to provide long-term price floors and volume certainty, lenders gain the revenue predictability they require to advance construction and term financing. A well-constructed RNG supply agreement, negotiated with a creditworthy counterparty and aligned to the project's capital stack, can meaningfully reduce the cost of debt and unlock equity investment that might otherwise remain on the sidelines. Project developers who present at Biogas Summit 2027 with case studies demonstrating how they have secured bankable offtake arrangements are shaping the commercial standards that the wider industry will follow.

Feedstock security represents an equally critical dimension of bankability. Lenders scrutinizing a digester project will assess not only the quantity and quality of organic waste streams committed to the facility, but also the contractual durability of feedstock supply
